downfall theory embarks on a new chapter as it hosts a full release from a producer other than its owner, sanys. myztical isn’t exactly a newcomer though, and the ukrainian producer has already two releases to his credit on nicz records. given the title of his debut on downfall theory, it is no surprise to learn that myztical is using it as a means to question reality. inspired by the science fiction writer philip k dick and decades of electronic music, he certainly succeeds on venturing into uncharted territories on the title track. muffled, repetitive vocal samples, an atonal rhythm and relentless, slightly distorted kicks show that quite often, simplicity is the most potent ingredient. on “faith of our fathers”, myztical disappears farther down the wormhole. splintered rhythms, deranged howls and a deranged filter push his vision for broken beat techno into the abyss. “substance d” sees the ukrainian hotshot return to a more linear approach, pounding kicks underpin ghostly shrieks before a breakdown sees the track descend into grimy, woody mcbride-style acid. the accompanying vocal sample, the embodiment of a bad trip, only serves to accentuate the track’s darkly hallucinogenic qualities. finally, there’s “shifted realities” - it revisits the jagged filters of “faith of our fathers”, but does so against the backdrop of a pounding industrial kick and a grungy, low-slung rhythm.

returning to houndstooth a year since the release of his one sound/layer lock ep is second storey. after spending most of 2015 focussing on his collaboration with laurence osbourne second storey & appleblim present also over at r&s records, alec storey came back into the fold as part of the houndstooth 3rd anniversary compilation earlier this year. now he returns to the label in full with a gleaming new ep, bismuth.

one of the most accomplished and celebrated bands in the field of contemporary, unclassified pop music. almamegretta are masters in combining a wide range of elements such as dub, funk, reggae, world and electronica, all filtered through their own deep southern italian roots. the band from naples is now back with a new album, mixed by the dub master adrian sherwood, who had already been involved in their mid-nineties masterpiece “sanacore”. this new work consists of ten tracks, nine originals plus a well chosen cover of an old neapolitan hit by nino d’angelo transformed into a lovers rock style song. almamegretta’s original line up of gennaro t tesone, paolo polcari and raiz is augmented by a great list of collaborators and the result is a strong and multi layered set made of afro-funk numbers, reggae ballads, and other riddims, while the british dub influence remains central within the group’s wide sound palette. the title “ennenne”, which means no name, is inspired by the acronym used for those who are born from unknown parents. the right title for such a highly dense picture based on the combination of contemporary sounds and social topics.

so wow... jiraffe - out’a the box. well what can i say, when i first heard this record i just melted... on the first few bars and the tempo already was a fav, my ears pricked up and then woahhhhhh... that bass came in and oh god how that went through my whole body and shook me like a thunderstorm... those synths and percussion just left me floored... probably one of the most cherished re-issues that you will buy... don’t know about out’a the box... if you don t already own it, you will and it will be in the box for a lifetime.
